  4. Welcome to Mini Notepad!
  5.  
  6. Introduction
  7. ------------
  8. Mini Notepad is a versatile multi-page text file
  9. editor. Each document is displayed on a tabbed page
  10. making it easy to switch between many files.
  11.  
  12. The editor can be configured to occupy a minimum of
  13. screen estate and stay on top of other programs.
  14. Context-sensitive shortcut menus provide access to all
  15. the editor's commands. Mini Notepad makes it easy to
  16. open frequently used files; it can even do so
  17. automatically each time you start the program. You can
  18. also open files by drag-n-dropping files from File
  19. Manager or Explorer.

  21. Mini Notepad can restore its size and position on the
  22. desktop from a previous session. An option is available
  23. to make Mini Notepad stay on top of other applications.

  25. This program is Freeware! Thank you for sending me a

  29. Why "Mini"?
  30. -----------
  31. Mini Notepad can be configured to occupy a minimum of
  32. screen estate. You can hide the menu, tool bar and hint
  33. line and use the popup menus to access most commands.
  34. As a result, your document fills almost the whole
  35. application window. This is particularly useful when
  36. you want to keep Mini Notepad open on top of other
  37. applications.

  39. Also, Mini Notepad has been optimized to handle notes
  40. and small text files efficiently. If you need to edit
  41. large multi-megabyte text files, then this program is
  42. not for you (I have another program, called Super
  43. NoteTab, designed for such needs - see further down).

  64. Installation
  65. ------------
  66. There is no special procedure to follow. Just place
  67. the program in the Windows directory or wherever you
  68. prefer.
  69.  
  70. - Windows 3.1 users:
  71. If you want to add Mini Notepad to one of your Program
  72. Manager groups, the easiest way to do it is with
  73. File Manager. Just select the file MININOTE.EXE and
  74. drag it from File Manager to the group where you would
  75. like its icon to appear. You can also run the program
  76. by double-clicking on it from File Manager.

  78. - Windows 95 users:
  79. The easiest way to set the Mini Notepad icon on your
  80. desktop is to use Explorer. Just select the file 
  81. MININOTE.EXE and drag it from Explorer to an
  82. unoccupied space on your desktop. You can also add a
  83. shortcut to it in your Start menu by choosing
  84. Settings / Taskbar...

  87. Mini Notepad Shortcuts
  88. ----------------------
  89. Click with the right button of the mouse inside the
  90. document and you will have access to a shortcut menu
  91. with clipboard and other useful editing commands.
  92.  
  93. Use the same mouse button on the tab bar and you will
  94. get a large choice of commands for managing the
  95. open documents and configuring the editor. If you have
  96. chosen to hide the button bar, then the commands they
  97. represent will also be listed in the menu.

  99. Look at the hint line for more information about the
  100. highlighted menu item or button.

  103. Other Useful Information
  104. ------------------------
  105. You can define default document properties through the
  106. "Viewer Options" command. These apply to all files
  107. that you open subsequently and to documents which have
  108. not been assigned properties (font, tab size, word
  109. wrap, etc.) through the "Page Properties" command.
  110.  
  111. Default properties are automatically saved when you
  112. quit Mini Notepad and used when you start the program
  113. again. Page Properties, however, are only restored
  114. with files that are automatically reopened by Mini
  115. Notepad.
  116.  
  117. Whenever you modify a file, an asterisk (*) appears
  118. after the corresponding document name in the page
  119. tab. It disappears after you save the file or undo
  120. the changes. This cue is useful when you are editing
  121. several open files at the same time, as you can
  122. immediately see which files may need saving. Mini
  123. Notepad does, however, always prompt you to save or
  124. discard changes before closing a document or the
  125. program.

  127. When Mini Notepad is configured to "stay-on-top",
  128. the Find/Replace dialogue boxes are modal. In other
  129. words, you cannot return to the editor until you
  130. close the dialogue box. When the program is not
  131. "stay-on-top", they are modeless (you can edit
  132. documents while the dialogue boxes are open).

  134. Note that the Undo command removes all changes made
  135. to the document since it was loaded or last saved.

  137. The Windows 3.1 version of this program can edit files
  138. up to 32Kb in size. The Win95/NT version can handle
  139. sizes up to about 61Kb. Larger files can be displayed
  140. but are truncated at the size limit and cannot be
  141. edited.

  153. eye on my web site as I plan to release an editor
  154. similar to Mini Notepad (also as Freeware), but which
  155. can edit files of any size. It will be called Super
  156. NoteTab.
